Helmets are so much better, and so much better looking, than they were when we were growing up. Bought my first skis and ski clothing at Herman's in SmithHaven Mall (1977), and I still remember my mother trying to convince me to buy a helmet. I told her that I'd run into a tree on purpose if I had to wear one. I still have the bright green Gerry Goose Down jacket, which I guess seemed cool at the time. Maybe I was already damaged.

Fast forward a couple decades, and I'm pretty sure I'd be drooling (more) if I hadn't been wearing a helmet while trying to snowboard last year. Renting the helmet when I rented the snowboard was money well spent. Returning everything to the rental counter after 45 minutes was the second best decision I made that day.

Maxim would be a definite no-no... the others might be OK. I may replace the covers of questionable materials!

Just FYI, when he's overseas, you probably won't be able to send him most of those items. Different rules for different countries. When my nephew was in Iraq, one of that country's no-nos was "Do not send firearms to the troops." My very favorite.

Whether intentional or not, this was a very nice PSA.

When I lived downstate, a nonprofit down the street from me called the Association for Neurologically Brain Injured Children (ANIBIC) would have really liked this post.

This Denver story didn't get as much national exposure as I expected, so I don't think the TU picked it up, but it's interesting to consider how the story would have been handled locally, not just here, but in any market.

It would be featured on page one, but the real bonanza would be online, where they would post the video (which I did as well, so no opinion intended), and also feature the story in numerous blogs. Commenters would then condemn the anchor, the dog, the dog handler, the firefighters who rescued the dog, partially frozen lakes, news helicopters, news anchors, the newspaper, and other commenters.

Newspaper editors will tell you that one story does not make a significant impact web traffic. That's right, but what can't be dismissed is the cumulative effect of handling EVERY story that way. Do that and you are building some traffic.
