Gags of Our Fathers

My 14-year-old son said to me the other day, “Dad, have you ever seen The Three Stooges?”

Have I ever seen The Three Stooges? Why, I oughta…. but instead of grabbing him by the nose, I simply replied, “Soitenly!”

He instantly understood. I then launched into some Curlyisms. Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk. Wooo-wooo-wooo-wooo-wooo. Nyah-ahh-ahh. We bonded over the classics. He asked if remembered the one where they’re delivering ice. Oh, please. “What do I look like, a knucklehead?”

It’s very comforting to know that the stuff you found funny as a teenager is still funny today. Kids get bombarded with so much content, I was afraid that the things we loved might just seem quaint and old-fashioned. Between cable and the internet there’s more comedy around than ever.

On Sunday, driving a car full of Boy Scouts home from a camping trip, several of them launched into verbatim recitals of Monty Python skits. I astounded them with my thorough command of the Cheese Shop sketch.

  1. My kids and I often enjoy sitting down at the computer and pulling up old Looney Tunes cartoons. The set of Rocky & Bullwinkle DVDs we once brought home from the library were also a hit.
