Printed Matter

My son, Alex, is training in Mississippi, and while the Army has plenty to keep him him busy, he asked for some reading material to help pass his free time. I sent two books, a novel, The Given Day by Dennis Lehane — and because he asked for something on investing, A Random Walk Down Wall Street by Burton Malkiel.

Oh, yes, and a few magazines:

  • Esquire
  • Guns and Ammo Handguns Annual
  • National Review
  • Journal of Counter Terrorism & Homeland Security
  • The Economist
  • Maxim

That’s eclectic. I need to put together another package to send this week; your suggestions are most welcome.

  1. Just FYI, when he’s overseas, you probably won’t be able to send him most of those items. Different rules for different countries. When my nephew was in Iraq, one of that country’s no-nos was “Do not send firearms to the troops.” My very favorite.

  2. A Brief History of Time (Stephen Hawking)
Winter Of The Fisher (Cameron Langford)
Very different in context and content but, both entertaining…IMHO.

  3. With respect to the magazines, you can’t g0 wrong with the usual suspects, including Time, SI, Smart Money and American Heritage.

I’m a big fan of the comic novelist Christopher Buckley, so as far as books are concerned, maybe consider Thank You for Smoking, No Way to Treat a First Lady and Little Green Men,

  4. Books: Anything by Vince Zandri. Abraham Lincoln – Vampire Hunter, or Pride and Prejudice and Zombies are fun AND historical.
Magazines: Any issue of Consumer Reports, the magazine for those who don’t but anything.
Other: Copy’s of Trader Joe’s Fearless Flyer.

  5. That’s quite the varied selection of periodicals. Reminds me of the time the mailman rang my doorbell to hand delivery my copies of Playboy, Fangoria and American Cinematographer. ” I just wanted to see the guy who reads these three magazines,” is all he said.

    1. Good ones… I particularly like the political and news coverage in Rolling Stone; SPIN more for the music writing.
